Valve, the creator of the hand-held computer device called Steam Deck has deleted a promotional video. Why you might ask? An Emulator was clearly shown in the video which is often very controversial, especially for platforms where the device in question that it is emulating is still being sold and circulating. Viewers who watched the video spotted a Nintendo Switch emulator application lurking in the library which is “pretty damn” controversial when you’re effectively showing an emulator that allows you to play a competitor’s games.
So, what is the emulator on the steam deck you might be asking yourself? Yuzu is open-source of the Nintendo switch which is legal by all rights, however the roms you may acquire may not be if you don’t own the media/software itself. Emulation can be a sensitive topic, one that valve likely does not want to be directly associated with prompting Valve to upload an emulator-free version of the same video a short while later, which you can see below:
“Valve’s new official video for the Steam Deck has a very interesting game icon in it,”
Industry insider Nibel tweeted yesterday
Then later following up with:
“Update: Valve has removed the original video and reuploaded a new one with a small difference”
