Team Ninja, the developer behind games like Nioh, Dead or Alive, and Ninja Gaiden, is rumored to be working on a new Final Fantasy game for publisher Square Enix. The game is reportedly titled Final Fantasy Origin, and may be announced as soon as June. Square Enix has planned to appear at this years E3, and some are speculating that that is when the announcement will be made.
Interestingly, Square Enix has already released a game called Final Fantasy Origins, back when the original PlayStation was still around. This Final Fantasy Origins was a compilation of the first two games in the series, remastered. Why they have the same name, if it is an oversight, or if the name will be changed later, will probably be revealed later.
Rumors that have been coming out have people comparing the game to both FromSoftware’s Dark Souls, and interestingly, Respawn Entertainment’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. It is said to be far more accessible than Nioh, and made for a much wider audience. It is also said to be set during the events of the first game in the Final Fantasy franchise. It will likely launch on the PlayStation 5, with a possible PC port later.
Another component of the rumors that have spread is that Team Ninja will release a playable demo of Final Fantasy Origin in order to gain player feedback. This is likely, as the developers had released demos for both Nioh and Nioh 2 for exactly the same reason. Square Enix and Team Ninja reportedly have a close working relationship, due to the work the studio did on Dissidia Final Fantasy NT (pictured above), which was a fighting game populated with characters from the Final Fantasy franchise.
For more we will have to wait until June.
