Today, developer CD Projekt Red did a “long term outlook” briefing and it’s looking very good for it’s long term goals. they announced news on their upcoming projects, including one codenamed Orion, a Witcher 3 sequel but also surprisingly there is a full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 on the way.
This, the company has said, will be the “next Cyberpunk game” and it will take the “Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe.”
There’s no mention here of the company’s long time Cyberpunk multiplayer project, which has been on their development timeframe for several years and previously described as a “triple-A” release. However, along with this latest news CD Projekt was implementing multiplayer to “most of our new games to enrich the single-player experience”. This may mean, the new sequel will feature a multiplayer experience.
A new trilogy of games for the Witcher franchise was announced, this would begin with a project codenamed “Polaris”, and will be released over the next six years.
The company also has a third party project currently known as “Canis Majoris” for the witcher series, developed out of house by another studio using the IP. This is said to be a full-featured Witcher game, but outside of the three games planned that will develop themselves in-house.
Not just that but The Witcher is going multiplayer, project “Sirius” that is being developed by Molasses Flood. Sirius will include a multiplayer element on top of a single player experience that will include “a campaign with quests and a story”.
AS shown in the chart above, a new IP game was announced, separately to the witcher or cyberpunk franchises. “Hadar” as it’s known is also being developed, but for now details this are at a minimum. CD Projekt Red states this game is still in the “earliest stages of the creative process”, and therefore development on it has not yet started. The company did share that it will be an “entirely distinct IP”, that will be “created from scratch” within CD Projekt Red.
Cyberpunk 2077 has seen renewed interest, some might say a renaissance of the genre, this in short has been something that has been attributed to the well received Netflix Anime show called Edgerunners.
Saturday 1st – 2nd on the Sunday, Valve’s statistical data showed that Cyberpunk 2077 was the fourth most popular game on Steam Deck by total hours played, topped only by Stardew Valley, Elden Ring, and Vampire Survivors – in that order.
